Becoming Our Higher Self

by Mary Mageau

The higher self is referred to and understood by many different schools of spiritual teaching. The lower self, or our ego personality, is not our true self, because the ego is trapped by a plethora of its own desires, needs, likes and dislikes. As soon as an ego based person achieves his/her desire or acquires an object, a new desire springs forth in a never ending sequence. An ego driven person will judge everything exclusively in relation to its own needs and desires. Only when one can detach themselves from their ever present I, Me or Mine, can they step back objectively to view each life lesson or circumstance. Ultimately we must all understand the ego personality to be the illusion that it actually is. By engaging in spiritual practices such as meditation, study and prayer, a person is enabled to transcend his/her ego personality and begin to realize their higher self. Through this process one can truly discover his/her soul and begin their genuine approach to the Divine.

When your personality (the unification of your spiritual, emotional and mental bodies) has fully developed, integrated and evolved, it then becomes your higher self - the perfect instrument through which your soul can fulfil its goals and express itself on the earth plane. As your higher self, you then carry out the purpose of your soul instead of following the desires of your ego personality. Your higher self is the intimate and integral aspect of yourself that remains aware of and interacts positively with the whole of your being. Your higher self is the most perfect form of ‘you’ that exists in the universe and it actively guides you on your journey through life.

This guidance manifests itself in your life in many subtle ways: as the still, small voice within (conscience), or it may communicate directly as vivid images or pictures, through flashes of insight and feelings and as intuition or knowingness. In trying to understand the perspective of the higher self in relation to the ego or personality self, we might visualize ourselves attending a conference in a huge auditorium, that has been partitioned into many smaller rooms. Our greater whole being occupies the entire floor as well as all the smaller rooms, while our 3D consciousness would only be aware of the one small room in which we were focused. Our higher self, in comparison, would be fully aware and be participating simultaneously in all rooms on the entire floor. Thus the higher self holds a much greater vision of our entire being and of the many rooms or planes within which we exist.

Our lower personality self is not always aware of our higher self if our lives are cluttered with busyness, actions or attitudes that cut us off from our higher self. Our higher self always signals to us when we are out of alignment with it through pain, tension and disease. People always know and feel deep down inside if they are not aligned with the laws of life or are not living out their true purpose. When the personality self uses its will against the higher self, signs of conflict begin to appear in the conscious mind. These manifest as feelings of anxiety, stress, warning dreams, discontent and uneasiness. If ignored these feelings accumulate and manifest as illnesses in the body, mind, emotions and relationships. This leads to conflict between the lower and higher selves that could ultimately result in a split or cleavage within the psyche. Dr. Albert Schweitzer called the higher self, ‘the wise doctor within’ and its streams of positive energy hold the key to healing.

Contact with our higher self is demonstrated by:
· A growing sense of responsibility and purpose for living
· A willingness to accept responsibility for all of one’s thoughts, word and actions
· A desire to openly practice forgiveness
· Making choices that lead to a growth in wisdom, inner peace and gratitude
· Practicing spiritual will and genuine service
· Reflecting joy, harmony and unconditional love to each and all

We can begin to open a pathway to union with our higher selves by first practicing self-respect and self-esteem. Without this, a poor self-image could prevent gifts of the higher self from flowing into the personality. It is through meditation that we are enabled to contact the life of the higher self, so as to be nourished by its strength, wisdom and total love for us. We can relax and soften our body, emotions and mind in order to release much superficial tension. We can also choose to live more quietly and to simplify our lives. But when true contact is finally made it will result in the awareness of a new ability to think more clearly and with greater understanding. One will become more forgiving and have better rapport with others; knowing and feeling that there is a powerful presence within us – a wonderful source of healing, courage, strength, unconditional love and a new motivation.

We can draw our higher self to us through the following exercise. Sit quietly and relax with several deep gentle breaths. Release unnecessary thoughts and identify with the higher self by visualizing or imagining a bright column of healing light that comes from above your head (where the higher self is located). See this enter your body and move downward radiating outward and bathing every organ and cell in your body with white light. Then see it continue down into the earth under your feet, grounding you into the planet. Now call lovingly to your higher self, inviting it to come forward and to co-create with you. Ask it to fulfil your life, to become your ultimate coach and partner in order to express its qualities. Your higher self loves you truthfully and totally and will reply to your request. But you must first begin this process through your desire and conscious invitation. Therefore it is the task of your personality self to become aware of the higher self, thereby achieving the state of higher consciousness. This is a major goal of spiritual development and self-realization.

Let's not get too paranoid though, it's also a symbol of the microcosm, or human.

Ever reviled, accursed, ne'er understood,
Thou art the grisly terror of our age.
"Wreck of all order," cry the multitude,
"Art thou, and war and murder's endless rage."
O, let them cry. To them that ne'er have striven
The truth that lies behind a word to find,
To them the word's right meaning was not given.
They shall continue blind among the blind.
But thou, O word, so clear, so strong, so pure,
Thou sayest all which I for goal have taken.
I give thee to the future! Thine secure
When each at least unto himself shall waken.
Comes it in sunshine? In the tempest's thrill?
I cannot tell--but it the earth shall see!
I am an Anarchist! Wherefore I will
Not rule, and also ruled I will not be!

Ray Kurzweil - Our Bodies, Our Technologies

How close are we to a world in which the abilities of machines are indistinguishable from those of the species that invented them? Closer than you think, says award-winning scientist and author Ray Kurzweil who has dedicated his career to blurring the line between humans and machines. His inventions have used technology to enhance and replace humankind's biological capabilities, while his most recent books reverse the relationship, attributing souls and intelligence to machines. His forthcoming book, to be published by Viking Press, is entitled The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology; it explores the social and philosophical ramifications of our potential to overcome the limitations of biology.

All I have to say is, when they are able to make technology outside the body that works like it's supposed to & doesn't crash randomly. I'll start considering considering (not a mistake) technology inside my body.

Buddhism - The Art of Enlightenment

Buddhism - The Art of Enlightenment
The cold hard reality is that Buddhism can be as much a dogmatic Belief System as any other BS. When I went to Thailand the only Buddhism I saw from the common people was praying to Buddha for MONEY before their shift started. I mean wow, talk about missing the point. It was a huge disappointment. Most don't even bother anymore to do that. I asked tens of people if they meditated and the answer was always no. The only real Buddhists I saw were at the temples. Another example a friend told me, about people who 'convert' to Buddhism and blabber on about rebirth and karma, yet don't practice the teachings either. Buddha said "work out your own salvation, do not depend on others." Another whise Buddhist saying is: "if Buddhism practices tolerance for all living beings, it is useless to judge other religions and call yourself a Buddhist."

The Roots of the Matrix

I was nearly turned off from watching this thanks to the vid info. There's a difference between "interpretations" and "explaining all", a big difference.

From the vid info: This video seperates The matrix trilogy and explains 'all' (ahum, some, geez the arrogance :p) the beliefs structures, religions beliefs, philosophies, etc. that are woven into the matrix movies. It uses the writers' and directors' own movie to show their alternate agenda. One example of how closely the movie is really based on religious beliefs is that the license plates on the cars during the highway chase sceen are actually Bible books and verses that parallel what is happening in the movie. And this video clearly shows it would take much longer to fully explain the depth of which the writers wove the stories, than it did for them to write it. (or steal/borrow/use parts from several other authors for instance Sophia Stewart.)

Daily Dedroidify: 8 Circuits

Daily Dedroidify: 8 Circuits of Consciousness Model

This is a 'short' introduction to the wonderful model of the 8 circuits which will help you understand personal human behaviour, habits and beliefs, and also put 'paranormal' and spiritual experiences in a logical framework.

The 8-circuits-of-Consciousness
is a heuristic model to help us navigate through our personal evolution. In the works and books of Timothy Leary, Robert Anton Wilson, Antero Alli, John C. Lilly and others, these great minds suggest guidelines, meditation practices, rituals and even consciousness-altering substances linked to each circuit to help us evolve as the circuits harmoniously interconnect to raise our consciousness.

Always remember that the map is not the territory, the menu is not the meal.

"To understand neurological space, Dr. Leary assumes that the nervous system consists of eight potential circuits, or "gears," or mini-brains. Four of these brains are in the usually active left lobe and are concerned with our terrestrial survival; four are extraterrestrial, reside in the "silent" or inactive right lobe, and are for use in our future evolution. This explains why the right lobe is usually inactive at this stage of our development, and why it becomes active when the person ingests psychedelics (or engages in other right lobe activating practices.)" - Robert Anton Wilson 8 Circuit Model intro

Very short summary from (edited)
The Terrestrial Circuits
1. The Biosurvival Circuit: imprinted in infancy. Concerned with sucking, nourishment, cuddling, biosecurity.
Government abuse: Safety (You need us), 'Terrorism', Terror Threat Alerts, Tasers, Wellfare (and the constant threats of taking your money if a few stupid forms aren't in order), Lowering Living standards, Higher prices.

2. The Emotional-Territorial Circuit: imprinted in the toddling stage. Concerned with territorial demands, emotional power tactics, political domination-and-submission strategies.
Government abuse: Divide & Conquer through Belief Systems (Religions, Ideologies) which are defended emotionally (not logically), Political Puppets seen as leaders, Don't pay attention to the man behind the curtain.

3. The Semantic Circuit: imprinted by human artifacts and symbol systems. Concerned with handling the environment, invention, calculation, prediction, building a "map" of the universe.
Government Abuse: Propaganda, Thought Control, Mainstream Media, 'Education'.

4. The Sociosexual Circuit: imprinted by the first orgasm-mating experiences and tribal "morals." Concerned with sexual pleasure, local definitions of "moral" and "immoral", reproduction, nurture of the young.
Government Abuse: Guilt, Morals (and going to war over them), Staying 'normal' in the Tribe.

The Extraterrestrial Circuits
5. The Neurosomatic Circuit: imprinted by ecstatic experience via physiological or chemical yogas. Concerned with neurological-somatic feedbacks, feeling high, somatic reprogramming (Christian Science, faith healing, etc.).

6. The Metaprogramming Circuit: imprinted by advanced yogas. Concerned with reimprinting and reprogramming all earlier circuits, relativity of "realities" perceived, cybernetic consciousness.

7. The Neurogenetic Circuit: imprinted by advanced yogas. Concerned with evolutionary consciousness (past and future), DNA-RNA-brain feedbacks, Jung's "Collective Unconscious."

8. The Neuroatomic Circuit: imprinted by shock or near-death experience. Concerned with quantum consciousness, non-local awareness (beyond spacetime), Illumination.

The point of Pastor Wright's sermon is that America has been and remains a deeply racist country. Instead of seeing an impassioned African American leader whose message is, well, farily accurate the Mainstream Media only sees an angry black man screaming "goddamn America". I think they just proved him right.

The Great Bank Robbery

Banking is a ponzi scam. Banking is nothing but a government sactioned, giant multi-level game. It is a pyramid scam that makes all other scams look like child’s play. At the top of the pyramid is the Federal Reserve Board, and their owners. At the bottom are the little local branches of all the different state and national banks. As in all pyramid scams, the small branches at the bottom will fall first, taking most of the heat off those at the top. But eventually the pyramid must topple. In fact, we already hear the rumble of the pyramid starting to fall.

Of all the crazy shit going on in the world, this is one of the easiest to explain to people calmly (don't go all religious on their hiney). I mean, does anyone think it's normal to pay money... to take money out the bank? Seriously. Today someone I know who's very blue pill said Bankers are the biggest gangsters on the planet. That was only one of the few bright points of my crappy day, but it counts!

Religion teaches we have no choice but to accept their version of the truth

Which one feels better to you? Spirituality or religion?
Go to your heart for the answer. It will never lie to you

(Source unknown)

My summary:
Religion is a dogmatic belief system.
Spirituality to me is a catma way of life (of which aspects can be dogmatically interpreted too by the less intelligent). (PS: Spirituality is NOT equal to the New Age Belief System)

Dogma: absolute belief or doctrine held by a religion, ideology or any kind of organization, thought to be authoritative and not to be disputed, doubted or diverged from.
Catma: relative meta-beliefs or flexible opinions held by a person, thought to be interesting, likely or profound at most, hopefully only one of many views in that area, to be investigated and questioned continually, laughed at and perhaps even re-modelled, just for fun. (You get the idea ;p)

# Activates the 5th Neurosomatic Circuit (See 8 Circuits of Consciousness Model)
# Which means we let go of our Physical, Emotional, Logical and Social circuits and become the witness of our bodily sensations, emotions and our thoughts instead of identifying with them.
# Leads to a blissful witnessing zen state of mind (comparable to Marijuana)
# A better connection between mind and body (Hypnosis & NLP also work on the 5th Circuit).
# Multidimensional thinking as patterns, habits, programming and conditioning lessen.
# Meditation has been proven to improve creativity, intelligence, memory, alertness.
# It has been shown to improve physical, mental, and emotional health.
# By looking within we can really know and experience reality, instead of being limited to our beliefs or intellectual conceptions of it.
# We gain the freedom to choose whether or not to act on our thoughts and emotions.
# We learn to distinguish between objective reality and our mental and emotional dramas.
# Increase synchronicities, as the objective outside and the subjective inside worlds merge in a wonderful dance of meaningful coincidences.
# Integrates left and right brain functioning. Increases intuitive capabilities.
# Purifies the Nervous System (What a positive name btw :p)
# Align to the Quantum source energy vibration, a Quantum Symphony.
# Awaken the dormant Kundalini at the base of the spine to energize & evolve us.
# Brain functioning shapes the content of daily experience, in turn each experience shapes the brain.

Meditating twice daily, in the morning right after waking up and in the evening before dinner, is optimal for becoming a more integrated, healthy, conscious being on the road to conscious evolution and enlightenment.

As above, so below.
As within, so without.

Some meditations to try:
Yogani mantra meditation, instructions are in my own words: assume your preferred meditative position, first rest for a little while to get centered, just let your breathing be as it is, keep the mind clear, then introduce the mantra "I am", repeat in your mind as you like, the rhythm that feels right for you, you can change it anytime you want, just repeat it. If thoughts arise, let them pass by as clouds and return your focus to the mantra. You'll find with these instructions that include no breathing-exercises and such a free mantra method to be relatively easy for the beginner. (20 minutes)
Vipassana, instead of repeating a mantra, focus on the silence or on your breath, do not intervene in the breath if you choose breath. Choose one and stick with it. Let everything be, thoughts are not an interruption, they are part of the meditation, let them pass by as clouds and return to the silence or your breath. (30 minutes)
Samuel Sagan's Awakening your third eye with meditation audiobook is a great guided meditation for focusing on your Anja/Ajna chakra, it introduces it with two great general talks and has one lying down and a sitting up meditation. Remarkable effects can be expected soon.
Brain Sync: Awakening Kundalini is a highly recommended audio program for meditation practice, (warning: do not use it daily if you are a beginner or even an advanced meditator) it features a short explanation of kundalini, a short instructional track and then the guided meditation with several different forms or pranayama breathing. It's very powerful compared to other brainwave programs or guided meditations

Student: Master, master! When I meditated earlier I saw a vision of the Buddha!!!!
Master: That's nice, next time concentrate on your breathing and it will go away. :p

Two Types of Meditation by Josh Davis
Basically, meditation can be divided into two main categories:
Apophatic, the "way of negation," and cataphatic, the "way of affirmation." In both practices, the ultimate aim is to reach a state of supreme awareness and bliss. The way one goes about doing such, though, is very different. In apophatic meditation one empties the mind, while in cataphatic one fills it with a visualization, an object, a mantra, or a feeling. The object of focus expands by virtue of one's attention until it fills one's entire universe. Both practices are essential for a healthy approach to mysticism, and to life itself (which are really one and the same--at least for me).

In apophatic and cataphatic meditation alike, the primary issue one must deal with is the useless noise of the mind. Concentrating on something, or concentrating on nothing, quieting extraneous internal chatter may sometimes seem an impossible task. In fact, people have far more control over this than they give themselves credit--the real "you" is the one that witnesses, the experiencer. You are not your thoughts--you are the thinker of your thoughts. If you give them your attention, they will continue. But if you fully remove your attention from your thoughts even for a moment, they will stop.

"You're just left with yourself all the time, whatever you do anyway. You've got to get down to your own God in your own temple. It's all down to you, mate."
John Lennon

As a witness of thoughts, understand that you will not stop thoughts by reacting to them--it is precisely reaction that is holding you back, as reaction requires attention. Simply be aware of your thoughts as they appear and disappear, always returning to your point of focus, be it some thing, or nothing at all.

Apophatic meditation is very difficult to grasp at first, because there is so little that one actually "does." Simply witnessing thoughts without pursuing them may seem like a waste of time to the restless and impatient, who want quick results. For this reason it may be easier for beginners to concentrate on nothing by way of something--that is, make something such as your breathing the point of focus, but once you have eliminated all extraneous thoughts, stop focusing on breathing also, much like a scaffolding that is discarded once the building is constructed.

Another approach to the apophatic way is focusing on being the observer. That is, as thoughts appear in your mind, ask yourself who is thinking them. Observe each thought and let it pass, gradually becoming aware of the unmoving center around which they revolve. Thoughts pass you by. What and where are you? You are the stillness hidden within motion. See for yourself...

John E. Mack - Transcending the Dualistic Mind (transpersonal psychology)

Dr. John Mack, M.D., was a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and professor of psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School who had spent 40 years exploring the question of how our perception of ourselves shapes our perception of the world around us.

The Current Crisis: Transcending the Dualistic Mind. The events of September 11 reflect a growing planetary crisis that is deeper than the attack itself or its social, political and economic causes: We in the West are trapped in a dualistic worldview that reduces reality to simple divisions of good and evil. In his talk, Dr. Mack will discuss explorations of the Center for Psychology and Social Change (now the John E. Mack Institute), especially the study of the UFO encounter phenomenon and other anomalous experiences, that are revealing the possibility of a unifying cosmology that transcends this dualism.

A Kean Eye: Logo Can Make You 'Think Different'

Brief subliminal exposure to a company's logo can make you behave in ways you subconsciously associate with that company. For instance, the apple logo can make people act more "creatively," where as the IBM logo can make people act more "professional."

The logo symbolizes the power of the company's archetype, however we imagine it to be, which depends on how well their advertising resonates with you personally.

Alfred Korzybski

Since discovering Jacque Fresco's genius work and popularizing it as much as I can, I got contacted by an associate of his and I grabbed the chance to ask if his wonderful way of applying the scientific method to language and society was derived in anyway from Korzybski, who also influenced another one of my heroes Robert Anton Wilson so much, the answer was yes. So I'm gonna read this 900+ page monster of a book called Science and Sanity and put up a little post.

Alfred Korzybski was a Polish-American philosopher and scientist most remembered for developing the theory of general semantics (also check E-Prime)

The essence of Korzybski's work was the view that human beings are limited in what they know by (1) the structure of their nervous systems, and (2) the structure of their languages. Human beings cannot experience the world directly, but only through their "abstractions" (nonverbal impressions or "gleanings" derived from the nervous system, and verbal indicators expressed and derived from language). Sometimes our perceptions and our languages actually mislead us as to the "facts" with which we must deal. Our understanding of what is going on sometimes lacks similarity of structure with what is actually going on. He stressed training in awareness of abstracting, using techniques that he had derived from his study of mathematics and science. He called this awareness, this goal of his system, "consciousness of abstracting." His system included modifying the way we approach the world, e.g., with an attitude of "I don't know; let's see," to better discover or reflect its realities as shown by modern science. One of these techniques involved becoming inwardly and outwardly quiet, an experience that he called, "silence on the objective levels."

Korzybski and to be
Many supporters and critics of Korzybski reduced his rather complex system to a simple matter of what he said about the verb 'to be.' His system, however, is based primarily on such terminology as the different 'orders of abstraction,' and formulations such as 'consciousness of abstracting.' It is often said that Korzybski opposed the use of the verb "to be," an unfortunate exaggeration. He thought that certain uses of the verb "to be," called the "is of identity" and the "is of predication," were faulty in structure, e.g., a statement such as, "Joe is a fool" (said of a person named 'Joe' who has done something that we regard as foolish). In Korzybski's system, one's assessment of Joe belongs to a higher order of abstraction than Joe himself.

Korzybski's remedy was to deny identity; in this example, to be continually aware that 'Joe' is not what we call him. We find Joe not in the verbal domain, the world of words, but the nonverbal domain (the two, he said, amount to different orders of abstraction). This was expressed in Korzybski's most famous premise, "the map is not the territory." Note that this premise uses the phrase "is not", a form of "to be"; this and many other examples show that he did not intend to abandon "to be" as such. In fact, he expressly said that there were no structural problems with the verb "to be" when used as an auxiliary verb or when used to state existence or location. It was even 'OK' sometimes to use the faulty forms of the verb 'to be,' as long as one was aware of their structural limitations.

One day, Korzybski was giving a lecture to a group of students, and he suddenly interrupted the lesson in order to retrieve a packet of biscuits, wrapped in white paper, from his briefcase. He muttered that he just had to eat something, and he asked the students on the seats in the front row, if they would also like a biscuit. A few students took a biscuit. "Nice biscuit, don't you think", said Korzybski, while he took a second one. The students were chewing vigorously. Then he tore the white paper from the biscuits, in order to reveal the original packaging. On it was a big picture of a dog's head and the words "Dog Cookies".
The students looked at the package, and were shocked. Two of them wanted to throw up, put their hands in front of their mouths, and ran out of the lecture hall to the toilet. "You see, ladies and gentlemen", Korzybski remarked, "I have just demonstrated that people don't just eat food, but also words, and that the taste of the former is often outdone by the taste of the latter." Apparently his prank aimed to illustrate how some human suffering originates from the confusion or conflation of linguistic representations of reality and reality itself.

Iraq Winter Soldier Hearings: Victory for Independent Media

In 1971 at age 19, I had a life-changing experience when I met dozens of Vietnam veterans who’d descended on my hometown of Detroit to testify at the “Winter Soldier” hearings organized by Vietnam Veterans Against the War. In anguished presentations, the Vets painstakingly described the horrors against Vietnamese they’d seen or taken part in. And the attitudes of racism and bloodlust that motored the war. Many vets blamed the lies in mainstream media for convincing them to go to Vietnam in the first place.

Virtually every soul in that Detroit hotel banquet hall wept openly at the heartfelt, bone-chilling revelations pouring out of the Vietnam vets struggling with bloody memories and post-traumatic stress. But no one outside that hall could see or hear the proceedings. No TV or radio networks covered the event.

This weekend at the National Labor College near Washington D.C., a new generation of vets convened by Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) presented powerful hearings - “Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan” - that were more extensive and perhaps even more emotional.

Thirty seven years later, I again found myself sobbing at testimony from solemn young Americans returned from needless war, grappling with shattered lives over brutalities against civilians and prisoners they’d witnessed or participated in.

But I was nowhere near D.C.

This time, I watched the dramatic testimony - often buttressed by photographic and video evidence — live online at

The End of Money?

I hope this freaking world economy collapses before I have to get a job :p

The crisis may actually have far deeper roots, going back to the basis of capitalism itself, an economic system that constantly requires new markets to penetrate and cannot sustain itself without continually extending its reach. In a fully globalized world, where there are no new markets to reach or new resources to exploit, capitalism may have reached its natural limit. It is also imprecise to call the current system “capitalist” in a classical sense, as it is actually one where massive subsidies protect vested interests, from agricultural lobbies to oil companies, and the ideal of a “free market” is a convenient fiction.

In a fully globalized world, the Neoliberal model can only perpetuate itself through the types of shock effects described by Naomi Klein in The Shock Doctrine, where destruction is encouraged and then seized upon as an opportunity to redevelop and recolonize areas already within empire.

My parents bought into the psychiatrist's diagnosis that their only child had a mental illness, as in my parents' world doctors were genuine authority figures who knew what they were talking about. In the words of the late psychiatrist R. D. Laing,

"Attempts to wake before our time are often punished, especially by those who love us most. Because they, bless them, are asleep. They think anyone who wakes up, or who, still asleep, realizes that what is taken to be real is a 'dream' is going crazy."

Tragically, with the support and blessing of the psychiatric community, both of my parents passed away convinced that their son was crazy.

The Age of Criminalizing Children

By Victoria Hardy
I feel compelled to ask, have we all gone insane? When did normal childhood antics become criminal behavior? Have our teachers, principals, school boards, safety officers, administrators and policy makers become so numb, blind and fearful that they can no longer differentiate life threatening events, from simple childish pranks and behaviors? Or is it deeper that that? Are we knowingly training our children to live in a police state where any minor misstep may lead to imprisonment?

Top 10 Quotes Against Work

"All paid jobs absorb and degrade the mind." -Aristotle

It was true that I didn’t have much ambition, but there ought to be a place for people without ambition, I mean a better place than the one usually reserved. How in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 6:30 a.m. by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, dress, force-feed, shit, piss, brush teeth and hair, and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?”
—Charles Bukowski, Factotum, Black Sparrow Press, 1975

"I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables—slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war . . . our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires and movie gods and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off."

Why why why

"This experience with the homeless has been very meaningful for me. I have come to gain an understanding of the stresses and difficulties the homeless experience on a daily basis. I have gained an appreciation for the ingenuity that most display in going about their lives in a rather hostile environment. Let there be no mistake about it, life on the street is tough and fraught with danger. I was amazed by how very little complaining I heard. The complaint most heard was how terrible it feels to be responded to as if they simply didn't exist. Rather, many said that they would prefer that a passerby say something like 'go f**k yourself, you lazy bastard, get a job' rather than look away as they passed. However, most seemed to recognize that the looking away represented the public's disturbing conflict about the homeless situation.

During the hundreds of hours of exploration and hundreds of contacts, I was responded to in a hostile manner very, very infrequently. Almost universally, people were quite willing and often enthusiastic to tell their stories. Consistently I heard accounts of dysfunctional families of origin, untreated serious addiction and mental illness and a few bad breaks to many. Almost constantly I was reminded how fortunate most of us are having a place called home. Often the thought occurred to me that 'There but for the grace of God, go I'. Perhaps that should be the title for the project."
