Daily Conspiracy: Freudian Slip

Daily Conspiracy: Freudian Slip

The Freudian slip is an error in human action, speech or memory that is believed to be caused by the subconscious mind. The error often appears to the observer as being casual, bizarre or nonsensical, but has some deeper significance.
In everyday usage, Freudian slip has come to mean a slip-of-the-tongue that reveals the speaker's true meaning or intention.

Freudian slip demonstration

Case #1
"When I put my hand on the bible, I will swear to not... to uphold the laws of the land."
George W. Bush

Case #2
"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking of new ways to harm our country and our people. And neither do we."
George W. Bush

Case #3 & #4
9/11 Donald Rumsfeld's greatest hits
About the 9/11 Pentagon attack - "...and the missile to damage this building..."
About the 9/11 Pennsylvania Plane - "...shot down the plane over Pennsylvania..."

The link shows both quotes complete with links to reliable conservative (hehe, well I mean pro-Bush) links. The second quote even has audio links.

Case #5
LA terrorist plot debunked?
The latest Bush fable gets bitchslapped on MSNBC. On Late Night with Keith Olbermann: Gerald Posner takes a look at the possible "foiled" LA terrorist attack on "Liberty-I mean-Library-I mean-Bank Towers in Los Angeles.

Case #6
Larry Silverstein, leaseholder of the destroyed WTC complex, was interviewed in a PBS documentary about the 9/11/01 attack, America Rebuilds, In it, the elderly developer makes the following statement:
"I remember getting a call from the, er, fire department commander, telling me that they were not sure they were gonna be able to contain the fire, and I said, "We've had such terrible loss of life, maybe the smartest thing to do is pull it. And they made that decision to pull and we watched the building collapse."

This statement seems to suggest that the New York Fire Department decided to demolish the building in accordance with Silverstein's suggestion, since the phrase "pull it" in this context seems to mean to demolish the building. At least that interpretation appears to be supported by a statement by a Ground Zero worker in the same documentary: "... we're getting ready to pull the building six."

An alternative interpretation of Silverstein's statement is that "pull it" refers to withdrawing firefighters from the building. However, according to FEMA's report there were no manual firefighting operations in Building 7, so there would not have been any firefighters to "pull" -- at least not from inside the building.

Case #7
More Dubya magic from the Ask President Bush Event in Derry, New Hampshire:
"It's tough as heck in Iraq right now because people are trying to stop democracy. That's what you're seeing. And Iraqis are losing lives, and so are some of our soldiers. And it breaks my heart to see the loss of innocent life and to see brave troops in combat lose their life. It just breaks my heart. But I understand what's going on. These people are trying to shake the will of the Iraqi citizens, and they want us to leave. That's what they want us to do. And I think the world would be better off if we did leave - if we didn't - if we left, the world would be worse. The world is better off with us not leaving. It's a mistake to pull out."

Case #8
Catapult The Propaganda
"If you've retired, you don't have anything to worry about - third time I've said that. (Laughter.) I'll probably say it three more times. See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda. (Applause.)"
Tell them it's propaganda, promise to tell them three more times, and they applaud.

"Repetition does not transform a lie into a truth."—F.D.R.

Case #9
Serious business making!
"They looked at the same intelligence I did, and they voted - many of them voted to support the decision I made. It's irresponsible to use politics...
What bothers me is when people are irresponsibly using their positions and playing politics. That's exactly what is taking place in America,
This is serious business making - winning this war."

Case #10
"I think if you know what you believe, it makes it a lot easier to answer questions. I can't answer your question."
George W. Bush

Case #11
"There is no doubt in my mind... that we will fail."
George W. Bush

Case #12
"One of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the War on Terror."
George W. Bush

Case #13
"We need a common enemy to unite us."
Condoleeza Rice, March 2000

Case #14
"Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do."
NYC ex-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani

Case 15
"The major function of secrecy in Washington is to keep the U.S. people ... from knowing what the nation's leaders are doing."
John Stockwell, former CIA official

I'd go on but I have a life to lead :p
