One thing I remember learning in psych class was that people struggling with their own inner conflicts- particularly gender and sexuality conflicts- tend to obsessively project those conflicts everywhere they look, often in bizarre, imaginative ways. In ways that are often in defiance of simple fact, but are often so insistent about their interpretations that they embarrass people around them into a kind of silent complicity.
