Dice Man - Chapter Twenty

In November I received a telephone call from Dr. Mann informing me that Eric Cannon had been acting up while I'd been away a week at a convention in Houston, that it had bees necessary to increased his medication (tranquilizers) and would I please make a special trip over as soon as possible and see him. Eric might have to be transferred to another institution. In my temporary office on the Island I read through Head Nurse Herbie Flamm's report on Eric Cannon.
It had a kind of novelistic power that Henry James sought for fifty years without finding: It is necessary to report that Patient Eric Cannon is a troublemaker. There haven't been many patients in my lifetime that I would have to label that, but this is one. Cannon is a consciously evil troublemaker. He is disturbing the other patients. Although I have always kept this one of the quietest [sic] wards on the island, since he has been here it is noisy and a mess. Patients who haven't said a word in years now can't shut up. Patients that have stood always in the same corner now play pitch and catch with chairs. Many of the patients are now singing and laughing. This disturbs the patients who want peace and quiet to get better. Someone keeps destroying the television set. I think Mr. Cannon is schizophrenic. Sometimes he wanders around the ward nice and quiet like he was in a dreamworld and other times he sneaks around like a snake, hissing at me and the patients like he was the boss of the ward and not me.
Unfortunately he has followers. Many patients are now refusing sedation. Some do not go to the machine shop for factory therapy. Two patients confined to wheelchairs have pretended to walk. Patients are showing disrespect for the hospital food. When one man was ill to his stomach, another patient began eating the vomit, claiming it tasted much
better that way. We do not have enough maximum security rooms on the ward. Also patients who are refusing or not swallowing their sedation will not stop singing and laughing when we politely ask. Disrespect is everywhere. I have sometimes had the feeling on the ward that I do not exist. I mean to say no one pays attention any more. My attendants are often tempted to treat the patients with physical force but I remind them of the Hypocratic Oath. Patients will not stay in their beds at night. Talking with each other is going on. Meetings I think. They whisper. I do not know if there is a rule against this, but I recommend that a rule is made. Whispering is worse than singing.
We have sent several of his followers to ward W [the violent ward] but patient Cannon is tricky. He never does anything himself. I think he is spreading illegal d rugs on the ward but none have been found. He never does anything and everything is happening.
I have this to report. It is serious. On September 10, at 2.30 P.M. in the Main Room right in front of the destroyed and lifeless television set, a large group of patients began hugging each other. They had a circle with their arms around each other and they were humming or moaning and kept getting closer and humming and swaying or pulsating like a giant jellyfish or human heart and they were all men. They did this and attendant R. Smith attempted to break them up but their circle was very strong. I attempted to break their circle also as gently as I could but as I was so endeavoring the circle suddenly opened and two men physically clamped me with their arms and hands and I was drawn against my total will into the horrible circle. It was disgusting beyond my ability to say.
The patients showed no respect but continued their illegal hugging until four attendants from ward T plus R. Smith rescued me by breaking up the circle as gently as they could, unfortunately accidentally breaking my arm (the lower tibia minor, I believe).
This event is typical of the poor conditions which have developed on our ward since patient Cannon came. He was in the circle but since there were eight, Dr. Vener said we couldn't send them all to ward W. Hugging is also not technically against the rules which again shows the need for more thinking.
The boy never talks to me. But I hear. Among the patients I have friends. They say he is against mental hospitals. You should know that. They say he is the ringleader of all the trouble. That he is trying to make all the patients happy and not pay attention to us. They say he says that patients ought to take aver the hospital. That he says even if he leaves them he will come back. These patients, my friends, say this.
Because of the facts what I have written I must respectfully recommend to you;
(1) That all sedation be given by needle to prevent patients from falsely swallowing their tranquilizers and remaining active and noisy during the day.
(2) That all illegal drugs should be strictly forbidden.
(3) That strict rules be developed and enforced regarding singing, laughing, whispering, and hugging.
(4) That a special iron mesh cage be developed to protest the television set and that its cord go directly from the set which is ten feet off the floor to the ceiling to protect the wire from those who would deny the television set to those
who want to watch it. This is freedom of speech. The iron mesh must form about inch wide squares, thick enough to prevent flying objects from entering and smashing the screen but letting people still see the TV screen although with a waffle-griddle effect. The TV must go on.
(5) Most important. That patient Eric Cannon be transferred respectfully someplace else.
Head Nurse Flamm sent this report to myself, Dr. Varier, Dr. Mann, Chief Supervisor Hennings, State Mental Hospital Director Alfred Coles, Mayor John Lindsay and Governor Nelson Rockefeller. - I had seen Eric only three times since my Jesus session with him and he had been extremely tense each time and done very little talking, but when he walked into my office that afternoon he came as quietly as a lamb into a grassy meadow.
He moved to the window and stared out. He was wearing blue jeans, a rather soiled T-shirt, sneakers and a gray hospital shirt, unbuttoned. His hair was quiet long, but his skin was paler than it had been in September. After about a minute -he turned and lay down on the short couch to the left of the desk.
`Mr. Flamm,' I said, `reports that he believes that you are stirring up the patients to - improper behavior.'
To my surprise he answered right away.
'Yeah, improper. Bad. Lousy. That's me,' he said, staring at he green ceiling. `It took me a long time to realize what the bastards are up to, to realize that the good-game is their most effective method of keeping their fucking system going.
When I did, it made me rage against the way I'd been fooled. All my kindness and forgiveness and meekness just let the system step on everybody all the more comfortably. Love is groovy if it's for good guys but to love the fuzz, love
the army; love Nixon, love the church, whoa man, that is one lost trip.'
While he was speaking I took out my pipe and began filling it with marijuana. When he finally paused I said: `Dr. Mann indicates that if Flamm continues to complain you'll have to be transferred to Ward W.'
`Oh, boohoohoo,' he said, not looking at me. `It's all the same. It's a system, you see. A machine. You work hard to keep the machine going, you're a good guy; you goof off or try to stop the machine and you're a commie or a loony.
The machine may be blowing blacks under like weeds, or scattering ten-ton bombs over Vietnam like firecrackers or overthrowing reform governments in Latin America every other month, but the old machine must be kept working. Oh man, when I saw this I vomited for a week. Locked myself in my room for six months.'
He paused and we both listened to the birds singing away among the maple trees outside the building. I lit the pipe and took a deep toke. I exhaled, the smoke drifting idly in his direction.
`And all that time I began slowly to feel that something important was going to happen to me, that I was chosen for some special mission. I had only to fast and to wait. When I bopped my father in the face and was sent here I knew even more certainly that something was going to happen. Knew it.' He stopped talking and sniffed twice. I took another drag on my pipe.
`Has anything happened yet?' I asked.
He watched me take another lungful and then settled back onto the couch. He reached into kiss hair and brought out a home made joint.
`Got a match?' he said.
'If you're going to smoke, share mine,' I said.

NLP: The Meta Model

The Meta Model is a pragmatic communications model used to specify information in a speaker's language. It is often contrasted with the intentionally ambiguous Milton Erickson inspired-Milton model. The meta model was originally presented in The Structure of Magic I: A Book About Language and Therapy in 1975 by Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder, the co-founders of neuro-linguistic programming

It is used for gaining specificity, gathering info, assisting people in enrichening their reality maps, and it's the structure of nitpicking! It cuts through the bullshit, and is particularly helpful in therapy, discussions, arguments and seeing through salesmen, politicians, media BS and attempts for manipulation in general.

1) Mindread
You don't like me - how do you know I don't like you?

2) Lost performative
It's bad to be inconsistent - who says, how do you know?
it's a good thing to - according to whom?

3) Cause & effect
You make me sad - how does what i'm doing specifically cause you to choose to feel sad?
he makes me angry - how does what he's doing make you choose to feel angry?

4) Complex Equivalent
challenge it, how does one thing mean the other, give a counter example

she doesn't like me, she's always yelling at me - how does she yelling at you mean that she doesn't like you? Have you ever yelled at someone you liked?
Have you ever not yelled at someone and hated somebody?

You have no respect for my time cause you're late - how does being late have anything to do with respect, have you ever been late and respected somebody, have you ever been on time and disrespected somebody?

5) Presuppositions
If he knew how much I suffered he wouldn't do that - how do you choose to suffer, how do you know he doesn't know, how do you know he wouldn't do that if he knew?

6) Universal Quantifier
generalizations which are mostly untrue

She never listens to me - never? once? (exaggerate) What would happen if she did?
Nobody likes me - nobody? not one person?

7) Mobile operator of Necessity
I have to take care, I should go to school

What would happen if you didn't? - Expands their model of the world

8) Model operator of Possibility
Can, can't will, won't, may, may not, possible, impossible

I can't tell him the truth - what would happen if you did? What prevents you?

9) Nominalisation
Take the noun and turn it into to a verb

There's no communication here - who's not communicating what to whom? How would you like to communicate?
My relationship is terrible - what's terrible about the way you're relating?

10) Unspecified verb
He rejected me - retrieve the missing info - how/who specifically?

11) Simple Deletion
I'm uncomfortable - about who or what are you uncomfortable?
He never listens to me - who/never?

12) Lack of Referential Index
They don't listen to me - who specifically doesn't

13) Comparative Deletion
better, best, good, worst, more, less, most, least
She's a better person - better than whom, she's the best, compared to who
Your offer is expensive - expensive compared to what

14) Pacing current experience
if they try to link a yes-set, break it into chunks

15) Double Bind
If given two or three choices, create your own

Would you like me to stop by on monday or tuesday - wednesday :)

16) Conversational Postulate
answer instead of acting

Can you close the door - yes I can, would you like me to?

17) Extended quote
the other day I met... who said - what does one thing have to do with the other?

NLP: The Milton Model

The Milton Model is a model for indirect interpersonal communications inspired by psychiatrist and pioneer of medical hypnosis, Milton H. Erickson. The model was created by linguist John Grinder and Richard Bandler, the co-founders of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).

It is described by the authors as the reverse set of the meta model. Whereas the meta model sought to specify distortion, deletions and generalization in a speaker's language, the Milton model intentionally utilizes those patterns.

It is general, ambiguous and metaphoric. The Milton model and meta model of NLP were the first two models of NLP. Bandler and Grinder met with Erickson on a regular basis, and modeled his approach and his work over many months.

The Milton Model lists the key parts of speech and key patterns that are useful in directing another person's line of thinking by being "artfully vague", and in principle the model states that larger chunks (more general use of language) can lead to more rapport, while smaller chunks, (more specific language) is more limiting and has a greater chance of excluding concepts from a person's experience.

The patterns of the Milton Model can be used to
  • pace another person's reality to gain rapport.
  • access unconscious resources of another person to gather information or to lead them into an altered state.
  • distract the conscious mind.
You will find politicians and the media using these speech patterns a lot.
Unfortunately the names for the speech patterns are a bit overly complicated and silly, therefor I wouldn't advise you to try and learn them by their names, but just be aware of the patterns and perhaps try using them when it seems appropriate. These are taken from the wiki article and a Chris Howard training program.

1) Mindread
Claiming to know thoughts and feelings

I know that you're wondering
I think you would agree

2) Lost Performative
Valued Judgements with performer left out, not saying who says it

It's a good thing to wonder...

3) Cause and effect
If... then

As you go deeper into trance you feel more relaxed

4) Complex Equivalent

The fact that you're sitting there means that you can go into trance

5) Presupposition
Assumption

You are learning many things.
Before you go into trance, I'd like you to sit comfortably in that chair as we talk about your outcomes for today.
When you go into trance, you may discover many resources that you did not realize you had yet.

6) Universal Quantifier
Generalization using all, all the things, every, any, everyone,...

You can always improve your language skills with every conversation you have.

7) Model operator of Possibility

You can learn, one can learn, want to.

8) Model operator of Necessity

Have to, must to, need to,...

9) Nominalisation
Using nouns, process words, that are frozen in time, nouns that are no objects

Relationship, love,...

10) Specified verb
Unlinked verb
And you can, can you not?

causes you to wonder what the verb relates to

11) Tag Question
Question added after a statement to ease resistance:

and you can understand that, right?
you're coming, aren't you?
do listen, will you?
let's have a beer, shall we?
you're developing a deep state of relaxation, aren't you?

12) Lack of referential Index
Phrase that dosn't pick out a specific portion of the listeners experience

one can you know

13) Comparative deletion
comparison is made but not specified as to who or what it was made

more or less the right thing to do (compared to what?)
better to do it that way, would it be best if i come around 2 o'clock

14) Pacing current experience
verifiable experience described in undeniable way
yes-set

you're listening to the sound of my voice, and you're going through these audio series

internally they are going yes, you can include something plausible and because they're on a yes-track they accept the plausible statement

15) Double bind
statement that gives the illusion of choice

Would you prefer finishing this portion of the audio series now or later?
Would you like me to stop by on monday or tuesday?

Triple binds are less obvious

16) Conversational postulate (Indirect Suggestion)
Normally a yes/no response - causes person to take action

Can you close the door?
Can you just take a moment to take a deep breath and relax?

17) Extended quote
delivering message in form of a quote but inducing trance, displaces resistance

the other day I met... who said: 'you can understand this information easily

18) Embedding Questions & Commands
Rather than directly asking: "What are you thinking about?", one might state:
"I'm curious to know what you are thinking.", or
"I'm just wondering what you are thinking."

An embedded command is typically distinguished or marked out using a subtle shift in voice tonality or non-verbal cue.

You may begin to feel a sense of comfort, as you begin to develop these skills in your daily life.

19) Negative Command
Don't think of an elephant - what just happened, you probably thought of an elephant.

Don't go into a deep state of relaxation just yet, just sit down on that chair and get comfortable first.

20) Ambiguity
Homophones:
you're = your
merry = marry = mary

Oronyms:
ice cream = i scream
depend = deep end
the sky = this guy
delight = the light

21) Metaphors in general

The Industry Part 9 Sex Sells & Hollywood Magic Hashemsfilms.com clip

Magic: Sometimes known as Sorcery, magic is a complete conceptual system of thought, belief and knowledge that asserts human ability to control the natural world. So how does one control the natural world or "perform Magic"? It is a quite simple secret really: Manipulation of Emotions.

Emotion: An emotion is a complex pattern, involving experiential, behavioral, and physiological elements, by which an individual attempts tod eal with a personally significant matter of event.
Emotion arises without conscious effort and is either positive or negative. A good magician is a good behaviorist. Behaviorism: A philosophy of psychology based on the proposition that all things which organisms do - including acting, thinking and feeling can and should be regarded as behaviors. So in other words in order to perform "Magic" on a subject, one must control their emotional state and response. And in order to do that one must know their subject's behavior patterns.

So if the Magician studies or knows the subject's behavior patterns, the Magician can then manipulate the subject's environment to produce the desired emotional response. And the "spell" is a success. Magic has never left. Pills replace Potions. Holly-Wood movies replace wands. Media casts the spells (spelling, aaron :p).

Michael Jackson's "Cryptic" Dangerous cover

Thanks to Donna Marie for pointing out that Hanuman looks a lot like Wacko Jacko. As I checked out the Dangerous cover, there was more to talk about... (Nudity NSFW warning at end of the post)
It's a Dangerous World
From Bottom Left to Right
On the Bottom Left animals go into a "Pirates of the Carribean"-like ride, screaming faces on the back of their rides, Skull and Bones over the entrance, obviously. And skulls on the pillars. Also a Hand (Stay the f* out?) and Sun (Illumination?...) on each side of the pillars to enter.
Then you see a naked kid holding an evil (lizzy?) skull, standing on the hand of either Michael Jackson or that dirty old man to its right, whose got a young boy on his mind... The fingers except the middle finger and thumb are not covered, the ruling thumb, the fuck you finger and the anonymous fingers (no fingerprints)...

I think Michael had a lot of messages for the world, but had to keep them a little general, obvious and cryptic to you know, not get shot as fast as Lennon or anyone else with a decent message. This cover isn't very cryptic at all but quite out there, but the world is asleep and I never noticed it earlier either...
As long as Pedophiles rule the world, the results will be disastrous
Between the old elitist pedophile and the hand, there's a world reduced to a Factory that now overshadows the natural world, which ships out Pentagrams, Guns, Skull&Bones, Rockets, an Atomic Symbol (atomic weapons) and a Chemical Formula (bioweapons, or you know, vaccines), etc, all the good stuff!
On the far right you come out the ride with the All Seeing mEYEchael above it. Congratulations, that MK trauma based mind control got you all illuminated. Who comes out the exit? 2 kids and 2 skeleton demons. Nothing going on here! Only a peace sign on one of the pillars, there's obviously something missing. Sure there's peace, but an induced MK'd one and at what cost... A sad young Michael is there instead of a symbol on the right-side pillar...
Also look at the regal Bird on the right above the All Seeing Eye exit, beneath its cloak there's machinery connected to a human grown in a bubble, perhaps a hint at the genetically engineered robots that may run our politics (See Freeman & Obama). There's also a Black&White duality kid on the left.

The other many, many animals on the cover could be alluding to scenes like this perhaps... as Michael is seemingly wearing the Dangerous cover as a mask himself (see youtube vid still or first image).

Michael Jackson: Dangerous

The girl was persuasive The girl I could not trust
The girl was bad The girl was dangerous
I never knew but I was walking the line...
She's so dangerous The girl is dangerous Take away my money Throw away my time You can call me honey But you're no damn good for me
She came at me in sections With the eyes of desire I fell trapped into her Web of sin A touch, a kiss A whisper of love I was at the point of no return
Deep in the darkness of Passion's insanity
I felt taken by lust's Strange inhumanity
The girl is so dangerous I have to pray to God 'Cause I know how Lust can blind
It's a passion in my soul But you're no damn lover friend of mine
And then it happened She touched me
For the lips of A strange woman Drop as a honeycomb
And her mouth was Smoother than oil
But her inner spirit and words were as sharp as A two-edged sword
But I loved it 'Cause it's dangerous
I cannot sleep alone tonight My baby left me here tonight
I cannot cope 'til it's all right
You and your manipulation
You hurt me baby

Just keep the Eyes Wide Shut, world!

Anyone wanna play along in the decoding by all means do!

Adam Curtis: The Living Dead

This episode examined how the various national memories of the Second World War were effectively rewritten and manipulated in the Cold War period. For Germany, this began at the Nuremberg Trials, where attempts were made to prevent the Nazis in the dock—principally Hermann Göring—from offering any rational argument for what they had done. Subsequently, however, bringing lower-ranking Nazis to justice was effectively forgotten about in the interests of maintaining West Germany as an ally in the Cold War. For the Allied countries, faced with a new enemy in the Soviet Union, there was a need to portray WW2 as a crusade of pure good against pure evil, even if this meant denying the memories of the Allied soldiers who had actually done the fighting, and knew it to have been far more complex. A number of American veterans, told how years later they found themselves plagued with the previously-suppressed memories of the brutal things they had seen and done. The title comes from a veteran’s description of what the uncertainty of survival while combat is like.

In this episode, the history of brainwashing and mind control was examined. The angle pursued by Curtis was the way in which psychiatry pursued tabula rasa theories of the mind, initially in order to set people free from traumatic memories and then later as a potential instrument of social control. The work of Ewen Cameron was surveyed, with particular reference to Cold War theories of communist brainwashing and the search for hypnoprogammed assassins. The programme’s thesis was that the search for control over the past via medical intervention had had to be abandoned and that in modern times control over the past is more effectively exercised by the manipulation of history. Some film from this episode, an interview with one of Cameron’s victims, was later re-used by Curtis in his The Century of the Self. The title of this episode comes from a paranoid schizophrenic seen in archive film in the programme, who believed her neighbours were using her as a source of amusement by denying her any privacy, like a pet goldfish.

In this episode, the Imperial aspirations of Margaret Thatcher were examined. The way in which Mrs Thatcher used public relations in an attempt to emulate Winston Churchill in harking back to Britain’s “glorious past” to fulfil a political or national end. The title is a reference to the attic flat at the top of 10 Downing Street, which was created during Thatcher’s period refurbishment of the house, which did away with the Prime Minister’s previous living quarters on lower floors. Scenes from The Innocents (film) the adaptation of The Turn of the Screw by Henry James are intercut with Thatcher’s reign.

Double Jeopardy: It all started on the MORNING STAR

This movie just started on tv, and grabbed my conspiracy reality tunnel's attention for a while. Sorry short post with some random pickings, I saw this terrible movie before and don't wanna go through that again. But man this makes me wonder how much we'd see if we really start paying attention and know what to look for.

Plot: A woman framed for her husband's murder suspects he is still alive; as she has already been tried for the crime, she can't be re-prosecuted if she finds and kills him.

Opening lines, mother Libby (jack) PARSONS to child, fishing on the shore, son's lines start with a -, interpret it as 'them' talking to us:
I'm hungry I hope we catch something (with this movie)
Hey help me pull, turn this slowly, slowly! (we help 'them', slowly)
-I am doing it slowly...
Oh matty look
you see that
you see that big boat out there (and a one)
she is the prettiest boat on whidbey island (and a two)
that's the MORNING STAR (hellooo, Lucifer)
someday when yo'ure big enough we're gonna teach you how to sail, it's the best thing there is sailing
-better than fishing?
yeah but you know what kiddo, I don't think I want you to grow up (heh)
-why (easier to control)
what if you grow up and marry some beautiful girl who's gonna go sailing with me then?
-dad?
not a chance.

The Coast Guard boat approaches Morning Star:
Morning Star! This is the coast guard put the knife down now and step away!
-I don't know, I don't know... where my husband is!

the 911 call from the husband:
Mayday, mayday, this is Morning Star.
-State your emergency. -I've been stabbed.
I'm bleeding. Jesus... My name is Nicholas Parsons.
-State your position? -I don't know.
Three miles northwest of Whidbey Island, I guess.
Oh, God!

In court:
Mrs. Parsons, you've heard the testimony presented to this court, -
-and your explanation is that someone must have climbed aboard the Morning Star.
That's right.
Well, let's consider all the possibilities.
Maybe a band of pirates. Or aliens. Did aliens murder your husband?
No, aliens weren't beneficiaries in your husband's life insurance policy.

Also interesting from a dvd review site:
"Sporadic negative dirt (during second unit photography, such as establishing shots of a cursed boat, The Morning Star) hardly downgrades my opinion of the image, which is letterboxed at 2.35:1."
