I spent a long time dabbling in Eastern mysticism, but often felt adrift without a clear structure to guide my studies. When I first encountered the Qabalah years ago, the sheer amount of material to memorize put me off. Recently though, I felt a strong pull to explore it again, and this time, its framework resonated deeply, giving me the structure I had been missing.
Using it as a working map rather than a belief system, it became surprisingly resonant and useful. Something I could apply to dreams, decisions, and daily practice. As I'm planning to discuss it a lot from now on, here is a primer for the uninitiated, I've included an image loosely relating it to the 8 Circuit Model of Consciousness and the Chakras if you're familiar with any of those already. This post will not explain enough as that's a bit hard to do with the Qabalah, but that’s the point. It’s meant to open a door, to spark a mystery or a journey of your own.
The ten spheres
1. Keter - Crown
Represents pure being, the origin point before form. In practice, it’s the seed of intention and the sense of connection to the highest source.
2. Chokhmah - Wisdom
Symbolizes raw, unshaped inspiration. It’s the flash of insight or instinct before words, structure, or judgment enter.
3. Binah - Understanding
Gives form and limits to inspiration, turning insight into something coherent. It’s also the principle of integration - bringing ideas and elements together into a stable whole.
4. Chesed - Mercy
Represents expansion, abundance, and generosity. In life, it’s the urge to grow, include, and bless without holding back, and it carries the quality of grace - kindness freely given.
5. Geburah - Severity
Symbolizes strength, discipline, and boundaries. It’s the principle of cutting away what doesn’t serve and protecting what matters.
6. Tiferet - Beauty
Holds harmony and integration at the center of the Tree. It’s the unifying heart that balances love, will, and truth, and it embodies the very act of balancing both sides of the Tree of Life.
7. Netzach - Victory
Represents endurance, passion, and emotional drive. It’s the principle that keeps you moving through challenges toward a goal.
8. Hod - Splendor
Relates to language, symbol systems, and intellectual clarity. It’s the realm of codes, analysis, and organizing knowledge.
9. Yesod - Foundation
Represents imagination, dreams, and the subconscious patterns that shape reality. It’s the bridge between inner vision and outer manifestation.
10. Malkuth - Kingdom
Relates to the material world and physical embodiment. It’s the sphere of tangible results, action, and lived reality.
How to use this map
• For decisions: Notice where you are, then name what balances it. If you’re stuck in analysis (Hod), take one embodied step (Malkuth) or return to heart-integration (Tiferet).
• For creativity: Let an idea spark (Chokhmah), give it a container (Binah), then choose one next action (Malkuth).
• For boundaries: If you’re overextending (Chesed), restore a clear no (Geburah) that protects the heart (Tiferet).
• For communication: Shape the message (Hod), then sustain momentum over time (Netzach).
The Tarot connection
The spheres aren’t isolated—they’re linked by the 22 paths of the Tree, each corresponding to a card from the Major Arcana of the Tarot. These paths describe the journeys between states of being, such as the move from inspiration to structure, or from discipline to compassion. Studying these card-paths can make the Tree feel alive, turning it from a static diagram into a moving map of personal transformation.
Why dream work belongs here
Yesod is the natural home of dreams. It gathers impressions and symbols, then offers them up for understanding and integration. A simple practice is to place each dream scene where it seems to belong—heart-healing in Tiferet, boundary lessons in Geburah, repetitive work stress in Hod—so interpretation becomes structured instead of overwhelming.
A one-minute check-in
Name the sphere you’re living in today.
Name the balancing sphere you’ve ;maybe neglected.
Choose one small action that moves you toward coherence.
What comes next
This is only the frame. In future posts, we’ll look at how to work with it in practice and the concepts that shape it. For now, try the one-minute check-in for a few days and note what shifts.
The Woman in white is directing the Lion to her will. The power of shakti, the power of strength, also known as kundalini is usually working through the subconscious levels. It is the power of life. It renews every single cell of your body. It renews and heals every aspect of you through the subconscious level.
It's only with alchemy or with yoga that this power is consciously manipulated to accelerate evolution. But it is the purified subconscious, the tainted subconscious cannot touch this, as it would burn itself or would hurt itself.
The Green Lion
The Lion is the ruler of the Animal Kingdom, it represents the summit of the animal kingdom and all other kingdoms beneath it, the vegetable and mineral kingdoms. All of physical life before humanity.
The Green Lion is photosynthesis. Plants have the ability to turn sunlight into substance. They take the radiant energy streaming from the stars and from our own particular daystar the sun, they make form, they make bodies, holding that solar energy. And all other lifeforms derive a lot of their energy from eating the vegetable kingdom. Or from eating animals that have in turn eaten from the vegetable kingdom.
The Green Lion, the force of life in its ordinary state.
The Red / Gold Lion
But when it is deliberately concentrated upon, deliberately focused and sublimated, to bring to great intensity, the Red or Gold Lion represents the Kundalini force. In the east the Red/Gold Lion is symbolized by a tiger.
Skillfully direct the fire of life.
Amazing how a cartoon made to sell toys has such powerful symbolism. "I have the power" to turn the Green Lion with Gold potential into the Red (= same to Gold) Lion.
The garland of roses is the secret of the power of the White Woman over the Lion. She has a symbol of infinity over her head. The garland of roses around her and the Lion make up the same infinity symbol. It is also the symbol for the Holy Spirit. The symbol in the Christian tradition for the Kundalini.
The Father is the Superconsciousness, maker of all things visible and invisible. The Son is the self-consciousness, the waking self. The Holy Spirit that unites the two is the Subconscious which is the vehicle of Shakti.
The relation of the subconsciousness and the kundalini must be based on Love. There must be a trust, an intimacy, a caring for each other. This constitutes the skilled working. The Great Work isn't completed by violence, it's not done through harsh regimes of self-denial, of fasting, of unnatural practices that hurt the body. It's not done by philosophies that encourage and warp the suboncious mind by feelings of either disempowerment or elitism. The path of evolution is wholeness.
Where alchemy, like the forms of yoga is fearless, is that it takes the entire human being onboard. Nothing about the human being is rejected. Because it's recognized that all aspects of the human being are essentially sacred.
This is the love that is fearless, it shrinks for nothing. Because it knows itself to be at one with everything else, no matter how unpleasant the masks may be that present themselves before it. True spiritual growth is the path of wholeness and becoming one with the whole. Not saying these people I don't want, these things I don't want, I don't like that kind of thing or even or person. It's recognizing oneness with all that is.
This power is the fiery chariot.
Words by David Goddard - Symbolism of the Tarot (MP3 series).
For me the most incomprehensible system is the Kaballistic Tree of Life, having read around a dozen books on the subject, countless websites, it seems it's just a system where words are thrown upon words just to throw words upon words. What helps to make sense of it is Lon Milo DuQuette's explanation of the Kaballah as a system to make so many links and correspondences, which should cause a great number of synchronicities, that eventually the mind will shortcut so to speak. In that sense, I can finally see value in the Tree of Life rather than just a hopelessly confused system and can understand all the seemingly vague concepts thrown into each Sephirah.
Below is my most recent view of the tree as a practical system, combined with the chakras they seem to compliment each other here and there, helping our rational mind to overcome our programming. Mostly for chakras 3 through 5. Mostly I'm posting this so I don't freaking forget about it :p
Of course the Tree of Life is used in many other instances rather than psychological/practical. I'm eager to experiment with it in magick ritual, where one can explore the qualities of a Sephirah and be inspired by them, although while I seem to see the basic structure of such a ritual, it seems very hard to actually craft and perform one to get benefit from it, without a good example or template. Soon!
The Practical Kaballistic Chakra Tree of Life
7. Sahasrara - Kether Crown
The ineffible spiritual.
6. Ajna Third Eye - Binah Understanding & Chokmah Wisdom
Binah is intuitive insight (understanding) and Chokmah is transcendental wisdom, easy to see then how it relates to the Third Eye.
(If you have come across these attributes and not the countless others! This is in fact an edit of the post just after reading a passage in a small Kaballah book called Exploration in Jewish Mysticism by Lawrence Fine, I really should have a 24 hour draft rule, I feel really sorry for people who see posts as they just are published ;p)
(To be complete, on wikipedia the Ajna chakra is attributed to Chokmah according to some Kaballists, although others regard the third eye as corresponding to the non-emanated sephirah of da'ath (knowledge).)
Fortunately the next chakra-sephiroth combinations make more practical sense
5. Starting with the Vishudda Throat chakra of communication and expression, which is balanced between Geburah - Judgement (the root of all evil) and Chesed - Mercy. When interacting with others find the right amount of mercy and judgement to communicate and express for harmonious relations.
4. The Anahata Heart chakra & Tiphareth beauty, what else but love can lead to beauty? The most central of all things, even in the Tree of Life.
3. The Manipura Solar Plexus chakra of Will - two of the most confusing Sephiroth, being Hod and Netzach, have been explained as: Splendour and Victory, also Thought and Emotion. I like these one-word explanations best as a practical way of using the Tree of Life: Surrender and Endurance. The spiritual surrender of letting go, versus the timeless endurance of victory. Your will to choose: let go or push on.
2. The Emotional Sacral chakra - Yesod Foundation. The subconscious, the source of emotional triggers.
1. The Muladhara root chakra - Malkuth Kingdom. Focusing on survival, breadwinning, the physical.
These are sounds you can resonate while focusing on a chakra, as demonstrated by Kimba Arem on the audiobook with Andrew Weil called Self-Healing with Sound and Music.
I've been feeling my Chakra Crown swirl for several weeks now, I've informed myself that it means I'm progressing spiritually or consciously which is nice. At first it was only when I was doing meditation, a ritual or reading about consciousness, today it has started to swirl seemingly randomly. Before my re-engaging in spiritual practice I only felt my third eye swirl sometimes and that was always at seemingly completely random times. I found this epic related song, pay attention to the lyrics.
People of the world

So I've been exploring the Undoing Yourself stuff by Christopher S. Hyatt and at the risk of proving my extreme ignorance I really can't say it's doing much for me at all. Let me first say that I loved reading the book Undoing Yourself with Energized Meditation, I found the writing style hilarious at the time. Trying to re-read it however, it's a bit too grumpy for my tastes. I've got another double cd, and a dvd-cd-booklet package. Now the cd's are mostly just Hyatt bitching about the world and blowing up his own ego, almost nothing of worth is said in them and that's no exaggeration, the booklet for the first DVD, exactly the same, just mostly whining about random shit. Then we get to the DVD, now, the exercises in the original book didn't do much for me either. Since they consist of mostly pulling faces and kicking legs, I'm not too surprised. Same with the DVD, pull faces, do some stuff with your arms, roll your eyes and tongue around and say "ah" when exhaling.
I'm sorry, I know a lot of people reading this blog will be a fan of Dr. Hyatt and I was one too when first reading his book as he was part of my favorite 'crew' (even though he disses Crowley and Leary about every chance he gets, sometimes rightly so), but I don't see much merit in his system. In one sense I'm glad that half the material is just bitching sessions instead of actually useful information and guided audio, otherwise I might still be at it.
I think Hatha Yoga & Reiki will do about the same for energy blockages as this system will. I think it's not just the exercises and the few noticeable effects they cause, but also the way the man comes across on audio and video, he just seemed a grumpy old man. Just youtube him, I saw a video yesterday of him talking about his hobbies while sounding like he wanted to stab himself right there. I would have loved to see how he and Lon Duquette interacted when writing together as Lon seems such a cheery person. How can I follow a man's system to undo myself of emotional blockages, if the man who taught it seemed very emotionally blocked? He looked grumpy as hell when smiling!
Now I only judged after one book, double cd, a cd, a booklet and a dvd. But God help me if I have to listen to another hour of his bitching. I just can't do it just to see if there's a tidbit of actually useful information somewhere in there. I'm not saying there are no effects, sure there are. But the facepulling does just about as much as the 'body armor' exercise I usually do after a Hatha Yoga session, and of course the breathing has an effect but it's just like any other breathing exercise. According to the guy undergoing some exercises on the DVD, he had a spontaneous laughing session he couldn't stop, yet for some reason it's not on film... Later after showing exercises by his girlfriend, suddenly he is supposedly trembling after an exercise yet we don't see what caused it. I'm open to any comments or thoughts about this, but after putting in many hours exploring it for the last few days (and I realize they are supposed to be done longer than that), I can't say I will be Undoing myself anymore through these means. Let me know in the comments if you have undergone the exercises and disagree or whatever thoughts you have on the matter. Maybe I just need to keep it up longer to have any effects and I just made a complete fool of myself, but I just had to share.
I have acquired the Undoing Yourself DVD and CD by Christopher S. Hyatt and before trying out and adding the many exercises of this system to my current, already big routine, of consciousness practice I would love to hear some feedback from people who have been (un)doing these exercises already. Please drop a line in the comments or contact me at dedroidify at hotmail dot com. Thank you very much.
Whenever I hear/see Dr. Hyatt I always think "umadbro?", why's he so grumpy?
There are apparently a couple of chaps at radicalundoing.com who do sessions over skype. One hour will cost you a minimum of 797$, no that's not a typo, that's a batshit insane amount. I can't get an NLP client when I charge €20 or even do it for free lol... What a crazy world.
Just a word of warning to anyone planning to read Dione Fortune's Mystical Kabbalah, it's full of freaking typos, something went wrong with the scanning I think, it's not a major problem, I've been able to decipher 100% of the typos quite fast it's just a bit annoying. Anyway time to share some Kabbalah tidbits and here are the different ways to group the Sephiroth aka the Spheres of the Kabbalah. This will probably not make that much sense to the neophyte but there is some explaining and you can copy it in a textfile and keep it for future reference.Interesting thing happened yesterday, I was reading in the book about the different Tarot cards and their associations to the Sephiroth and the paths, and my third eye started throbbing for more than a few seconds, ok Universe, time to get myself a Tarot deck I suppose!
These different methods of classifying the Sephiroth are not competing systems, but are designed to enable the decimal system of the Qabalists to be equated with other systems, using a threefold notation, such as the Christian, or as we have already noted, a sevenfold system like Theosophy; they are also valuable as indicating functional affiliations among the Sephiroth themselves.
Three Pillars:
Pillar of Severity (Left-Hand) Negative, Feminine, Destruction Pillar of Mercy (Right-Hand) Positive, Masculine, Creation Middle Pillar of Mildness/Equilibrium, Harmony - Consciousness
Also see the 2 principles, Yin and Yang and the Tao (the Equilibrium between them). And the 3 channels of Prana: Ida, Pingala, Shushumna (central) The Kundalini rises through Shushumna central channel, and consciousness is extended. The western magical operaiton of rising on the planes takes place on the central pillar of the tree: Malkuth to Yesod, to Tiphareth, the path of the Arrow. Malkuth=brain consciousness, after any astral projection the ceremonial return is made to malkuth and normal consciousness re-establishes therein.
The Different Worlds
The Tree, considered from the initiatory standpoint, is the link between the microcosm, which is man, and the Macrocosm, which is God made manifest in Nature. A ritual initiation is the act of linking the microcosmic Sephirah, the chakra, with the Macrocosmic Sephirah; it is the introduction of a newcomer to the Sphere by those who are already there. They construct a symbolic representation of the Sphere on the physical plane in the furniture of the temple; they construct an astral replica of it by concentrated imagination; and by means of invocation they call down into this temple not made with hands the forces of the Sphere of the Sephirah they are working upon. These forces stimulate the corresponding chakras of the initiate and wake them to activity in his aura. The process of self-initiation by the meditations I have described is slower than the processes of ritual initiation, but it is sure enough if persevered with by a suitable person, but one cannot teach a jelly-fish to sing by feeding it canary-seed.
Atziluth - Archetypal World (World of Emanations) - Kether (Gods directly act through it) Four Colour Scales: King Scale Suit of Wands and Fire
Briah - Creative World Chokmah & Binah, Supernal Abba & Ama, Father and Mother (Archangels) Four Colour Scales: Queen Scale. Suit of Cups and Water.
Yetzriah - Formative World Six central Sephiroth (Chesed, Geburah, Tiphareth, Netzach, Hod, and Yesod) (Angelic Orders, choirs of angels) Four Colour Scales: Emperor Scale. Suit of Swords and Air.
Assiah - Material World Malkuth (Mundane Chakras, planets, elements, signs of the zodiac - natural centres of force) Four Colour Scales: Empress Scale. Suit of Pentacles/Coins and Earth.
Four Colour Scales:
King, Queen, Emperor, Empress Tetragrammaton - YHVH: Yod, He', Vau, He' the Four Worlds of the Qabalists; the four elements of the alchemists; the fourfold classification of the signs of the Zodiac and the planets into triplicities, employed by the astrologers; and the four suits of the Tarot pack used in divination.
Fist Palace: Three Supernals Seventh Palace: Yesod and Malkuth
The rest of the Sephiroth have a palace to itself. This reveals the intimate relationship of Yesod and Malkuth and enables the tenfold scale of Qabalah to be equated with sevenfold scale of Theosophy.
Countenance
Arik Anpin - Vast Countenance - Kether manifested as Abba, Supernal Father, Chokmah and Ama, the Supernal Mother, Binah. When united (positive & negative) are Elohim, this union takes place in Daath.
Zaur Anpin, Lesser countenance or Microprosopos Six Sephiroth are contained therein, the special one being Tiphareth. The remaining Sephirah, Malkuth is called the Bride of the Microprosopos.
Microprosopos is also sometimes called the King. Malkuth is then called the Queen. She is also called the Lesser Mother or Terestiral Eve as distinguished from Binah, the Supernal mother.
Final System of classification is under...
The presidency of the 3 mother letters of the Hebrew Alphabet:
Aleph, A - air Mem, M - water Shin, Sh - Fire
Under the presidency of Aleph is the Airy triad of Kether, in which is the Root of Air, reflecting downward through Tiphareth, the Solar Fire, into Yesod, the Lunar radiance. In Binali is the Root of Water (Marah, the Great Sea), reflected through Chesed into Hod, under the presidency of Mem, the Mother of Watei. In Chokmah is the Root of Fire, reflected downwards through Geburah into Netzach, under the presidency of Shin, the Mother of Fire.
So in the wonderful Comic Book Promethea, she gets initiated by Jack Faust into the Chakra Kundalini System in a rather tantric way. Read issue 10 if you wanna see it all: here are some teasers. The first image is from Issue 9 though.
Muladhara: earthly consciousness
Svadishtana: lunar sphere of dream, imagination, sexual fantasy
Manipura: solar plexus, strength, power, desire, fire, mars, heat, fierceness
Anahata: heart, sorrow, joy, soul, sun, gold, love
Visuddha: abyss, beyond existence, knowledge enters, where holy information leaks
Ajna: female principle, roles & identities turn inside out: magicians are male, their symbol is the wand, they seek to penetrate the mystery, once they succeed, they become magic, the mystery, that which is penetrated, they become female, hermaphrodite
Sahasrana: pure white diamond brilliance, crown, step out of time
Inevitably there comes a point upon the Inner Path where further advancement seems quite impossible and all past efforts an utter waste of time. Everything has become a dead end and a dead loss... Whatever degree we undergo, a corresponding change will take place in us, perhaps for better, sometimes for worse, but always for a distinct difference in consciousness as a result.
Chasms of Consciousness
What in fact has happened, is that we come to the point where nothing but some marked alteration of awareness will provide us with opportunities for making progress along that particular Path. It is as if while walking along a road, we came to a river and had to proceed by boat, swimming, building a bridge, or flying across. The Path would be the same, but the means of keeping to it quite changed. This happens when we come to spiritual 'standstill points' where we must either be prepared to change our methods of consciousness and get past the apparent barrier, or wander forlornly around the same circles again, looking for some other outlet. All outlets from those circles would actually present the same problem in various ways. When we come to these 'Chasms of Consciousness in spiritual Dimensions, the first decision must naturally be wether or not to attempt a crossing, and the second issue is the nature of the transition. The Great Abyss for instance is crossed by the Sword-Bridge, to symbolize the necessity for physical death, the passage of the soul being represented by the Line of Light along the edge of the Sword. Liberated from flesh by the point of the Sword, the soul flies Lightward by way of the Lightline towards the hilt, where it comes safely to the Hand of God which wields the Weapon. The principles of this aplpy to all chasm-crossing. We must be prepared to 'die', or part from our existing formalization of ideas which bind us to materialized beliefs, so that we may follow the path of pure power straight to its spiritual source beyond the confines of consciousness from which we would emerge into fresh fields of illumination. Unless we are ready to sacrifice the 'body' of our ideas on the Point of the Sword, and send their 'soul' Inwards to Light, we shall cross no chasms to gain new life among the splendours of resurrection. In other words, when we come to an Inner Space our working consciousness cannot span, we must sacrifice whatever fixed formulations (or bodies) we hold our ideas in, while projecting their 'souls' or principles Inwardly towards the Light of Truth for rebirth in another form (or body) which is suitable for life in conditions pertaining to the other side of the chasm. In some ways we do this all the time. For example if we follow an idea so far in words that it will go no further with much gain of meaning, then we might cross a chasm with it, and sacrificing the 'word body' resurrect the idea in a 'music body', a 'sculpture body', or perhaps a 'mathematical body'. We have retained the 'soul' of the same idea all along the line, but re-incarnated it in various forms to express it in different dimensions or conditions of conscious existence. The same principle applies to ourselves throughout our differing incarnations as materialized mortals. We get from one life to another across the Depths of Death, much as we follow a Lightline over any other Abyss.
Crossing the Abyss
In the spiritual dimensions of existence where Initiates of the Mysteries may be classed as inhabitants, very considerable alterations of consciousness indeed may be required between one side of an Abyss and another. So marked a change in fact, that it might almost amount to a reversal of polarity or entire revolution of nature. This is not unlike the phenomenon of what was called 'conversion', or the acceptance of quite different values, by what could be termed a 'standing jump' usually precipitated by some impacting event. One might perhaps be justified in thinking of this as being kicked or shot over a chasm. Such a drastic change, however, is not 'instant evolution'. We may become different beings from an expressional standpoint, but we do not become immediately better or more highly evolved souls just because we have crossed chasms into other conditions of consciousness. Man does not reach Godhood with even his wildest leap. The Lightning-Flash symbol from top to bottom of the Tree shows the instantaneous contact of Divinity with Humanity, but the spirally winding Serpent clearly indicates the upward Path of an evolving human soul. The down-pointing Sword symbolizes our means of bridging the gaps between our differing states of awareness by voluntarily sacrificing one formation of consciousness for another via the Line of Inner Light.
Whenever you are faced with a challenge, try the following. With deep relaxed breathing (as always) see a dark deep chasm preventing you from going on, the chasm is the size of your issue and across is steady ground. Then visualise a big majestic Sword or wizard-like Staff, representing your current spiritual progress. If the Sword/Staff is big enough to act as a draw bridge, let it fall in place and become the bridge, and you cross the chasm and overcome your challenge. I'm using this now for when I'm about to lose my temper or patience with something and it has worked out amazingly so far, during the afternoon of the first day I was starting to do this, my best friend who I had fallen out with for a few months contacted me and we are buddies again for which I'm truly grateful beyond words!

What's in a name: "The Volta is taken from a Federico Fellini book about his films, what he characterizes as a changing of scene, or a turnaround; a new scene to him is called Volta. Y'know, changing of time and the changeover. And Mars, we're just fascinated by science fiction so and it's something that ultimately looked as in anything I write, its meaning is always up to the listener. As the way we write songs and words, if it looks great on paper then to us it's like painting, so if it looks good meaning the second then people usually have a better interpretation than we ever would."
